Celebrations!
Grappling with this CGI problem, first individually, then in a group setting did allow for increased participation from students. It gave them a chance to share their insight and participate in ways they would have not in a whole group setting. Students were also engaged and wanted to participate! It was all really great to see.
Noticings
I was in charge of observing one student within the group. This was someone who frequently checks out or leaves during whole group instruction. This was interesting because when the host teacher started the lesson and asked for whole group participation, he immediately left. When I asked him why, he said he was afraid he would forget how to do the problem, which was why he left the group, got his paper, and began working on it individually at his table. I noticed that he was in fact doing the problem using the correct strategy that was taught and later, did end up participating with his group. It really reaffirmed the idea that what we perceive as educators of the whole group is much different than when we connect with individual students.
Change Ideas
I would like to implement intentional groupings to promote confidence and increased participation. I would also like to to take the time to have as much time to focus on getting to know my students' different needs individually. Providing more differentiation for students ready for a challenge. Work on translating what happened in the small group discussions to the whole group. Strengthening the math talk as a whole group that occurred at the end of the lesson.
