Content Understanding Goal

Students will apply their understanding of the importance of pollinators through creation of a song that reinforces their learning from this year and by designing a movement story that connects them to the pollinator of their class’ choice.

Students will understand how to convey ideas about pollinators through different movement concepts (shapes, pathways, levels, speed, sounds, locomotor movement).

1

Lesson Goal: I can move and freeze my body.

Task: Students learn to move with music  by using their own forms of expression, then learn to freeze when the music stops. They do this by playing different forms of freeze dance with different creative tasks.

2

Lesson Goal:I can move in different pathways.

Task: Students practice making different pathways ( zig zag, curve, wavy) with individual body parts first together on the carpet. They then work as a group and practice using their whole body. They then apply this to a movement story and share their moves at the end.

3

Lesson Goal: I understand how my individual body parts move.

Task:  Students review different body parts by recalling names, etc. They then practice moving each individual body part using musical cues. Students then create a short movement piece using each of their body parts.

4

Lesson Goal: I can move at different speeds.

Task:  Students learn the concept of “tempo” by identifying when music moves fast and slow in a song. When they hear a slow tempo, they crawl like a turtle, when they hear a fast tempo they march high with their needs. Then, they practice on their own, moving fast and slow to different types of music.

5

Lesson Goal: I can use my imagination to go on an adventure.

Task: Students start by identifying the difference between real and imaginary. We then review how people use their imagination to create stories. Students listen to a movement story and recreate it using their imagination.

6

Lesson Goal: I can hear and make high and low sounds.

Task: Students start by identifying high and low sounds using the read aloud of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They then identify different animals that make these sounds, and practice making them. Finally, they use movement to identify the high and low sounds in music.

7

Lesson Goal: I can create shapes with my body.

Task: Students start by looking at an intricate shape made by a group of professional dancers. They then practice making these shapes with their body by using different images. When they are done, they use a movement story to make letter shapes using their own imagination.

8*

Lesson Goal: I can use my voice, body, and imagination to tell a story.
(RESEARCH LESSON)

Task: Students will use all of the different creative dance, voice, and theater elements to create their own movement story that they will perform for an audience. This movement story will incorporate all of these standards.
